RESUMO

The persistent combustion of fossil fuels has resulted in a widespread greenhouse effect attributable to the continual elevation of carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere. Recent research indicates that utilizing CO2 as a pyrolysis gasification medium diminishes CO2 emissions and concurrently augments the value of the resultant pyrolysis gasification products. This paper reviews recent advancements in the pyrolysis gasification of organic solid wastes under a CO2 atmosphere. Meanwhile, the mechanisms of CO2 influence in the pyrolysis and gasification processes were also discussed. In comparison to noble gases, CO2 exhibits reactivity with char at≥710 °C, resulting in additional mass loss of the sample. In addition, CO2 was able to increase the specific surface area and stability of biochar and reduce biooil toxicity by lowering the content of cyclic compounds in the biooil, while CO2 was able to react with GPRs with some volatile products (e.g., light hydrocarbons) to increase biogas yield. Finally, CO2 also prevents catalyst deactivation by reducing secondary coke formation. We also recommend directing future attention toward utilizing unpurified CO2 in pyrolysis and gasification. This review aims to expand the utilization of CO2 and advocate for applying pyrolysis gasification products.

RESUMO

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an effective means of energizing high-water-content biomass that can be used to convert sewage sludge (SS) into hydrochar and reduce nitrogen content. To further reduce the emission of NOx during the combustion of hydrochar and seek proper disposal method of liquid product, the mechanism of nitrogen conversion was studied in the range of 180-320 °C and 30-90 min. At 180-220 °C, 42.15-52.91% of the nitrogen in SS was transferred to liquid by hydrolysis of proteins and inorganic salts. At 240-280 °C, the nitrogen in hydrochar was mainly in the form of heterocyclic -N (quaternary-N, pyrrole-N, and pyridine-N). The concentration of NH4+-N increased from 6.82 mg/L (180 °C) to 26.58 mg/L (280 °C) due to the enhancement of the deamination reaction. At 300-320 °C, pyrrole-N (from 15.92% to 9.38%) and pyridine-N (from 5.52% to 3.73%) in the hydrochar were converted to the more stable quaternary-N (from 0.31% to 4.28%). Meanwhile, the NH4+-N and amino-N in the liquid decomposed into NH3. Prolonging the carbonization time promoted the hydrolysis of proteins, the conversion of heterocyclic -N, and the production of NH3. Under optimal reaction conditions (280 °C and 60 min), the nitrogen in the SS is converted to stable forms and the energy balance meets the requirements of circular-economy. The results show that temperature determines the nitrogen form and the carbonization time affects the nitrogen distribution. So HTC has the potential to reduce NOx emissions from SS energy utilization processes.

RESUMO

The present study experimentally quantified the pyrolysis behaviors of waste solvent-based automotive paint sludge (OAPS) and water-based automotive paint sludge (WAPS) at four different heating rates using thermogravimetric-Fourier transform infrared (TG-FTIR) spectrometry and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass (Py-GC/MS) spectrometry analyses. Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) methods combined with the master-plots method were employed to investigate the pyrolysis kinetics and reaction mechanisms of waste automotive paint sludge. Three reaction stages and three reaction peaks in stage 2 were distinguished for both OAPS and WAPS degradation. The average activation energy (Ea) estimates for OAPS (FWO: 179.09 kJ/mol; KAS: 168.28 kJ/mol) were slightly higher than WAPS (FWO: 175.90 kJ/mol; KAS: 164.80 kJ/mol) according to FWO and KAS methods. The main pyrolysis reaction mechanisms of both OAPS and WAPS closely matched with the order-based model corresponding to 3rd and 2nd order random nucleation on an individual particle. The evolved gas species of CH4, CO2, phenols, NH3, H2O, and CO from OAPS and WAPS pyrolysis were identified by TG-FTIR. According to Py-GC/MS, hydrocarbons (47.2%) and O-components (42.7%) were relatively large after OAPS and WAPS pyrolysis, respectively. Melamine was the most abundant N-component product after pyrolysis of OAPS (5.8%) and WAPS (4.8%).

RESUMO

Investigating the release of organic pollutants from bricks made from solid waste is essential. Based on Fick's laws of diffusion, the diffusion model and diffusion-degradation model of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission from the bricks were deduced. The degradation and 64-day emission of PAHs in solid bricks made of oil-based drill cuttings were observed experimentally. The emission and degradation characteristics of 14 PAHs were obtained and fitted with the diffusion and diffusion-degradation models. The emission of most of the PAHs from the bricks at the beginning was in good agreement with the diffusion model, except for benzo[a]anthracene, pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, and benzo[a]pyrene. However, the emission of PAHs after some time was significantly lower than the theoretical value of the diffusion model. Moreover, fitting with the diffusion-degradation model gave better results, indicating that a joint diffusion-degradation mechanism controlled the emission of PAHs. Therefore, the diffusion-degradation model can better predict the long-term emission of PAHs in bricks made of oil-based drill cuttings.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to analyze the clinical effect of autologous fat-granule transplantation in augmentation rhinoplasty and explore methods to improve the fat retention rate. METHODS: A total of 70 enrolled patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: the platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) combined with high-density fat transplantation group (combined group) and the conventional fat-granule transplantation group (control group; n = 35 in each group). In the combined group, an appropriate amount of autologous fat was extracted and centrifuged, and the lower layer of high-density fat was taken and mixed with PRF isolated from whole blood for autotransplantation. In the control group, only fat was extracted and centrifuged for transplantation. The patients were followed up with for more than one year to observe the short- and long-term effects, complications, safety, and patient satisfaction. RESULTS: Six months after the operation, the nasal shape was stable, the contour was higher and more stereoscopic than before, the average increase of nasal height was 3.0 mm in the combined group and 2.0 mm in the control group. No complications, such as fat embolism, infection, or necrosis occurred during the 1-year follow-up. The satisfaction rate between the 2 groups has statistical significance (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Overall, PRF combined with autologous high-density fat transplantation is simple to perform, has a significantly increased fat-retention rate than the control group, and has stable long-term effects without obvious adverse reactions. A sufficient amount of fat and PRF transplantation can achieve a good orthopedic effect. Thus, this method can be widely used in clinical augmentation rhinoplasty.

RESUMO

Objective: To introduce a new surgical method for the repair of a large inner canthus combined with tissue loss at the inner canthal angle of the eye by using a bird-beak-type z-shaped asymmetrical flap and to summarize its clinical effect. Method: A total of 56 patients with a large inner canthus were randomly selected, and a bird-beak-type z-shaped asymmetrical flap was used on the nasal side of the lower eyelid to repair and reconstruct the inner canthal folds. The inner canthal point was located according to physiological aesthetics. The short and long arms of the z-shaped asymmetrical flap were separated, replaced, fixed, and shaped to reconstruct the skin folds of the inner canthus and restore its aesthetic morphology. Results: All incisions after surgery achieved primary healing, and all 56 cases were followed up for 6-20 months (average 8.6 months). The caruncula lacrimalis was moderately exposed, the inner canthal angles possessed a natural appearance, and the results of the surgery were satisfactory. Five patients developed scar hyperplasia within one month after surgery, and arnica gel was applied topically for 3-6 months until the scar faded or disappeared, but no obvious scars were seen in the surgical area of the remaining patients. In two patients, the internal canthi were asymmetrical, but this improved after adjustment. Conclusion: Repair of a large inner canthus and tissue loss at the inner canthal angle of the eye using a bird-beak-type z-shaped asymmetrical flap is a simple operation, resulting in minimal trauma. Postoperatively, the inner canthal angle possessed a natural appearance with no obvious scarring.

RESUMO

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) diffused from paint sludge are potential hazard contributing significantly to environmental pollution and exposure to them can cause severe health issues. In this paper, a diffusion-controlled model was firstly developed for characterizing the emission behaviors of cumulative VOCs from automotive solvent-based paint sludge based on the worst field management scenario. The presented model is characterized by two key parameters: the diffusion coefficient (Dm) and the initial emittable concentration (Cm,0), which can be simultaneously obtained by our proposed ER-history method. Four major components were detected including 1-butanol, butyl acetate and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene and 1-ethyl-4-methylbenzene. In addition, the model was validated by using environmental data in a ventilated test chamber, proving that the model is reliable and convincing. However, relative deviations of 1-butanol and butyl acetate are larger than those of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene and 1-ethyl-4-methylbenzene, indicating that the model is more accurate for predicting hydrophobic VOCs release than those of hydrophilic VOCs. Besides, an increase in Cm,0 and Dm tends to enhance VOCs cumulation release. Our studies provide new insight into experimental designs for rapid model parameters measurement and a sound basis for estimating VOCs cumulative release from paint sludge as well as for hazardous waste.

RESUMO

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitting from solid building materials can cause adverse human health and environmental climate effects. It's more cost effective and powerful for mass-transfer emission models to describe the emission characteristic of VOCs than emission chamber studies. In this review, the existing main physical mechanism-based models for predicting VOCs emissions from dry solid building materials have been discussed, as well as their differences and similarities. Ignoring internal diffusion and porosity of solid materials, single-phase model is generally quite safe for use in actual condition. Conversely, porous media model is good for understanding VOC-transfer principles in porous materials. Additionally, the porous media model and the single-phase model can be transformed mutually because their model parameters are correlative. The availability of emission models is largely determined by the reliable and useful model parameters. Therefore, substantial technologies and novel methods have been developed for parameter estimation, which have also been reviewed in this paper. How to readily and rapidly obtain model parameters is a future development direction. In addition, applying emission models to predict and control VOCs emission from other solid waste materials is another future research prospect.

RESUMO

Oil-based drilling cuttings (OBDC) produced from shale gas development is a hazardous waste that have high calorific values and should be disposed of properly. Burning bricks with OBDC is a promising co-disposal method; however, organic pollutants emitted during this process have not received sufficient attention. In this study, the composition and combustion characteristics of OBDC were determined, and the emissions of typical organic pollutants when burning bricks with the addition of OBDC were investigated; these included benzene series compounds (BTEXs), non-methane total hydrocarbons (NMHC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). The results showed that OBDC comprised large amounts of alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons, and combusted mainly in the temperature range of 145-450 °C with an ignition temperature of 145 °C. The co-processing 10% OBDC increased the concentrations of toluene, NMHC, and PAHs in the flue gases by ∼1000%, ∼500%, and 200%, respectively, compared to the control experiment; however, their emission concentrations were within the limits set by the Integrated emission standards of air pollutants of Chongqing. It is worth noting that 26.443 ng/Nm3 PCDD/Fs with a total toxicity of 0.709 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 was generated from the co-processing 10% OBDC, which was ascribed to the high content of chlorine and aromatic hydrocarbons in the OBDC-promoted PCDD/Fs formed during the burning and cooling processes. Though PCDD/Fs in flue gas exceeded the 0.5 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 limit prescribed in the Pollution control standard for hazardous wastes incineration of China, the realistic emission of PCDD/Fs is expected to meet with this emission limit after desulfurization treatment as PCDD/Fs can be absorbed by gypsum. It is recommended that a lower amount of OBDC is added to reduce PCDD/F formation at the source and to take more efficient air pollution control system in order to reach a stricter emission limit of 0.1 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 in EU and USA. Cycling flue gas may also be an effective method to reduce other organic pollutants. Under these conditions, co-processing OBDC in brick kilns can be achieved without serious environmental pollution, making it a potential method for disposal and utilization.

RESUMO

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of sewage sludge (SS) with and without calcium oxide (CaO) introduction was conducted at 160-240 °C, and the yield and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were evaluated for the first time. PAHs (2972.99 µg/kg) and toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) (373.09 µg/kg) yields in SS decreased by 13.61% and 14.65%, respectively, after treatment at 160 °C and substantially increased as temperatures increased. More PAHs were distributed in the hydrochar than in the aqueous products. Hydrochar yields decreased linearly with temperature, thus increasing PAH concentration in hydrochar; 6221.98 µg/kg of PAHs in hydrocar at 240 °C exceeded agricultural use standard limits. PAH and TEQ yields at 200 °C decreased by 5.55-15.98% and 2.88-3.54%, respectively, when 3-9% CaO was added, which could be ascribed to CaO inhibition in the free radical reaction for PAH generation. Additionally, 6% CaO addition substantially weakened the acceleration effect of high temperatures on PAH formation; the decrease of PAH yield at 240 °C was 22.14%, which is higher than that at other temperatures. Consequently, the PAH concentration in hydrochar declined by 2.33-22.37%. PAH content in hydrochar obtained from CaO-assisted HTC of SS fell within agriculture use standard limit and exhibits potential for use as a soil conditioner. However, condition with a CaO amount of 15% would significantly increase TEQ yields. Considering both PAH and TEQ yields and the ecological risks of PAHs in hydrochar derived from HTC of SS, the appropriate reaction conditions were found to be 200 °C with 3-6% added CaO.

RESUMO

Synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption near edge structure was employed to study the arsenic (As) speciation in 13 Pteris vittata L. populations collected from 7 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions in China. As in roots of P. vittata was mainly combined with oxygen (O), with a small amount of As combined with glutathione (GSH). Populations from Hunan and Guangxi provinces showed higher percentages of As-GSH in soots. As in roots of P. vittata was predominated with As(V), with the percentage of As(V) to the total As being 59.6±0.6%~83.8±3.8%. The As(V) percentage was in the order of HN5HN3>HN1>TW>CQ>AH>FJ>HN5>HN2>GX2>GX3>HN4>GX1, within the range of 2.4%~12.9%. Different from that in roots, As in shoots was predominated with As(III), with no As(V) detected. The disclosure of As speciation in the roots and shoots of P. vittata contributes to the future research on As accumulation mechanism.

RESUMO

The excretion of manure-borne steroid hormones, including estrogens and androgens in Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang province was estimated in this study on the basis of statistical data and by using the referenced estimation method in developed countries. In addition, the potential ecological risk of manure-borne steroid estrogens to local surface water systems from applying animal manure was preliminarily assessed. As a result of the rapid development of animal production, the excretions of manure-borne steroid hormones increased in all the three northeast provinces. In 2008, the emissions of total manure-borne estrogens and androgens increased by 2 272.7, 1 951.1 and 1 634.8 kg compared to those in 1998 in Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, respectively. Especially, the growth rates in the three capital cities of Shenyang, Changchun and Harbin were the fastest among their own provinces. The largest emissions of manure-borne steroid hormones, as well as the highest concentration of predicted estradiol equivalency (EEQs) in the surface water system were found in Liaoning province. According to the lowest observable effect concentration for 17beta-estradiol (10 ng x L(-1)) recommended by the Environmental Agency of United Kingdom, 17.1 ng x L(-1) of EEQs level in Liaoning province might have become a potential risk to local surface water systems.

RESUMO

Arsenic (As) contamination poses a high risk to human health. Phytoremediation based on As hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata has been utilized on large areas of contaminated farmland in southern China. However, the reason for the observed differences in As removal among P. vittata populations remains unclear. In this study, spores of four P. vittata populations were collected from four neighboring sites with varying soil As concentration (from 108 mg·kg(-1) to 7527 mg·kg(-1)) and then cultured in a controlled environment to analyze their differing abilities in terms of As accumulation and tolerance. The results indicate that populations from low-As habitats exhibited 80% greater shoot As concentrations compared with those from high-As habitats. On the other hand, populations from high-As habitats exhibited approximately five times greater biomass compared with those from low-As habitats when exposed to the same As stress. Thus, the As accumulation and tolerance of P. vittata were suggested to be two independent processes. Further investigations reveal that the As absorption and As species conversion occurring in roots are two essential activities that bridge the soil As concentration and the responses of P. vittata to As. Depending on the As concentration of the target soil, the selection of different P. vittata populations can result in approximately an eight-fold difference in terms of remediation efficiency.

RESUMO

Natural steroid estrogens such as 17beta-estradiol (E2) with low concentrations (ng x L(-1)) can adversely affect the reproductive health of aquatic organisms. Batch equilibrium experiments were conducted to quantify the sorption of E2 to two agricultural soils and a river sediment from different physiographic regions in northern China, a critical step in predicting transport of estrogens in runoff from agricultural fields. Meanwhile, the effect of pig manure and its compost borne dissolved organic matter (DOM) on E2 sorption was investigated. The Freundlich isotherm provided a good fit to model the sorption of E2 to agricultural soils and the sediment (R2 > 0.76). E2 adsorption nonlinearity was found for alluvial soil, black soil and the sediment, most isotherm deviation from linearity occurred in black soil (n = 0.74). The sorption of E2 to agricultural soil and sediment was correlated to the organic carbon content of each soil/sediment (P<0.05) with K(f) values ranging from 26.2 to 57.5. It was also found that the presence of DOM decreased estrogen sorption in soils and sediment, especially manure compost borne DOM. These results suggest that E2 was mostly adsorbed on organic matter in soil and sediment, and coexisted pig manure DOM could increase mobility at low concentration level and enhance the risk of E2 transport to ground and surface waters.

RESUMO

Arsenic (As) reduction and translocation are key processes for As hyperaccumulation by the hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata L. Micro-X-ray adsorption spectroscopy of P. vittata's rhizoid tissues revealed that As reduction mainly occurred in endodermis during translocation from epidermis to vascular bundle. Prior to reduction, arsenate (As (V)) translocation was an active process requiring energy and employing a phosphate (P) transporter. Use of a synchrotron X-ray microprobe showed that As (V) and P were cotransported and that this process could be enhanced by As (V) exposure or P deficiency but restrained by energy release inhibition caused by 2,4-dinitrophenol or sodium orthovanadate. In contrast, after As reduction, As(III) translocation differed from P translocation and was more efficient, appearing free from the apparent endodermal blockage. The results here revealed the role of the P transporter on As translocation as well as the key role of As reduction in As hyperaccumulation by P. vittata.

RESUMO

The process of producing cement products from solid waste can increase the level of pollutants in the cement products. Therefore, it is very important to establish a pollution control standard for cement products to protect the environment and human health. This paper presents acceptance limits for the availability of heavy metals in cement products which have been produced from solid wastes and explains how the limits have been calculated. The approach and method used to formulate these criteria were based on EN 12920. The typical exposure scenarios used in this paper involve concrete being used for drinking water supply pipelines and concrete pavements and are based on an analysis of typical applications of cement in China, and the potential for contact with water. The parameters of a tank test which was based on NEN 7375 were set in accordance with the environmental conditions of typical scenarios in China. Mechanisms controlling the release of heavy metals in concrete and a model for that release were obtained using the leaching test. Finally, based on acceptance criteria for drinking water and groundwater quality in China, limit values for the availability of heavy metals in concrete were calculated.

RESUMO

The abundance and phylogenetic composition of bacterial community in leachate of semi-aerobic and anaerobic landfill were compared through real-time polymerase chain reaction and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. In semi-aerobic landfill scenario, the bacterial 16S rRNA copy numbers in leachate had no significant reduction from initial stage to stable period. In the scenario of anaerobic landfill, the largest bacterial 16S rRNA gene copy number was found in leachate at initial stage, but it reduced significantly at stable period. Moreover, methane-oxidizing bacteria population in stable period was lower than that in initial period in both two landfill processes. However, semi-aerobic landfill leachate had more methanotrophic bacteria populations than that in the anaerobic one. Furthermore, according to the sequences and phylogenetic analysis, obvious difference could be detected in bacterial community composition in different scenarios. Proteobacteria and bacteroidetes took up a dominantly higher proportion in semi-aerobic landfill leachate. To summarize up, different landfill methods and its landfill ages had crucial impacts on bacterial abundance and composition in leachate of semi-aerobic and anaerobic landfills.

RESUMO

We aimed to optimize germination and growth conditions of the arsenic hyperaccumulating fern, Pteris vittata L. Pot experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of soil pH, soil calcium (Ca) concentration, and temperature on the sexual propagation of P. vittata. At 25 degrees C, germination was both accelerated and increased by high soil pH and Ca concentration. Spores of P. vittata did not germinate on medium with a pH of 4.6. Amending strongly acid soils with 27.5 or 40 micromol/g Ca(OH)2 significantly improved the growth rate during both the germination phase and the gametophyte phase. Amending strongly acid soils with NaOH (55 micromol/g) promoted germination, but did not affect subsequent growth. Among the different temperature, germination and growth rates were higher at 25 degrees C than at 20 degrees C or 30 degrees C. The distribution of P. vittata in China might be influenced by its requirement for high pH and high Ca concentration in the soil and appropriate growth temperature to complete sexual propagation. These results provided important information for improving breeding conditions of P. vitatta and will be helpful for extending the range of areas in which P. vittata can be used for phytoremediation.
